About The Author

This is the presentation of a research paper, funded by a grant to Loyola Marymount University, that explores the origins of the practice of Kundalini Yoga As Taught By Yogi Bhajan (KYATBYB). This includes revisiting the works of other scholars, examining the historical presence of yoga within Sikhism, and an overview of spiritual transmission and lineage that looks at Yogi Bhajan’s teachers Sant Hazara Singh, Sant Virsa Singh, and Dhirendra Brahmachari.

Concepts Covered in the course:

  • Knowledge of the historical and political dimensions of KYATBYB 
  • An exploration of the concept of lineage in modern yoga practice
  •  An in-depth examination of the two men most frequently credited with influencing Yogi Bhajan’s teachings: Dhirendra Brahmachari and Virsa Singh
  •  A comparison of kundalini kriya with the practices of other historic schools and works of postural yoga

Format:

The Live Session was aired on Saturday January 29, 2022 at 8-10AM PT(LA) 16:00 GMT (London).  This live webinar will be a 1.5 hour long presentation with experiential meditation components led by Rob Zabel. Q & A for the community: 30 minutes.

Rob Zabel

Rob has been teaching yoga in Los Angeles for over ten years, intuitively incorporating his own blend of energetic practices from diverse traditions. His academic work has largely focused on traditional yoga practices of Indian ascetics, the Sanskrit and vernacular works that describe these practices, and the various modern lineages and schools that teach them. Rob is also the producer of various educational podcasts including Yogic Studies, Buddhist Studies Online, and Sanskrit Studies. When he isn’t busy translating Sanskrit texts, he likes to ride his longboard along the Venice boardwalk.
