Sat Nam. Greetings and Happy New Year from New Mexico!

I am looking forward to a great new year with all of you. We have been together for the first year of the Aquarian Age and I am delighted to be living it with you!

Speaking of greatness, KRI is honoring two individuals in 2013. The KRI Board has selected Guru Dev Singh Khalsa and Guru Raj Kaur Khalsa for their many years of service, steadiness and dedication to Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan ™. Both of these beautiful souls have taught for many years, organized trainings, made valued contributions to the Aquarian Academy and inspired thousands of students and teachers over the years. I am very happy that we can honor them on our web site for all of 2013.

Did you know that 10% of everything we sell on the Source, our online store, goes to the Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings? Check out some of our new products. Buy The Chakras Manual! This is the Companion Manual to The Chakras DVD series which is a unique treasure of information that includes fourteen individual lectures with 2 lecture DVDs per Chakra, all by Yogi Bhajan. It has seven DVD packages with two DVDs per package.

And we are very happy to have the second edition of Bibiji Inderjit Kaur Khalsa’s A Taste of India. An Indian cookbook for the health-conscious gourmet! It has over 180 delectable kitchen-tested recipes and wheat and dairy free recipes that are low in fat. There are mouthwatering snacks, appetizers and desserts, along with an unusual variety of vegetarian main dishes.

Or buy an eBook of your favorite manual for your Ipad or Kindle.  Your purchases help us to continue the work of digitizing and preserving all of Yogi Bhajan’s audio and video tapes. We plan on having the Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings accessible data base up in 2013. We need your help to make that a reality. Of course you can donate directly too!

If you are looking for a kriya to begin the New Year and New Age, I have a suggestion for you. It is the “Praanayam for Purification” kriya from Praana Praanee Praanayam and “Attitude of Gratitude” from Success and the Spirit. I will be talking about it and demonstrating it on the video of the month.

Thanks again for a wonderful 2012! It is a new age and a new time for all of us to create the future we want for ourselves, our families, our Dharma and our planet. May your New Year be filled with good cheer, blessings, and grace.

In God I dwell,

Nirvair Singh Khalsa

News from The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings

Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings

Sat Nam and Happy New Year from The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings!

At the start of the new year, many people contemplate health. Health can be defined as not just the abscence of disease, but a state of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. It is a state of overall balance in which we can most enjoy life.

There are many factors to consider when one wants to improve their health and there are many different traditional paradigms of health care. Traditionally in India, the primary health care paradigm has been Ayurveda, The Science of Living. Ayurveda addresses the overall state of the energetic system of the human being - there is consideration of the state of the balance of the chakras, of the gunas (the states of mind - sattvic or pure and clear, rajasic or aggravated and driven for achievement, and tamasic or dark and dull), of the five elements (in their combinations of Vata - Ether/Air, Pitta - Fire, and Kapha - Water/Earth), and of the energetic meridian structure of the human body (the marmas / marma points).

Through the daily practice of Kundalini Yoga, Yogi Bhajan gave us a powerful technology through which we can systematically adjust our energetic flow in order to achieve increasingly healthful states of being. For example, Yogi Bhajan shared with us three key meditations - Sat Kriya, Kirtan Kriya, and Sodarshan Chakra Kriya. He said that Sat Kriya “will balance the chakras”, Kirtan Kriya “will balance the elements”, and Sodarshan Chakra Kriya will “give us the spiritual experience”. Furthermore, the mantra “Sat Nam” contains the five Primal Sounds (Sa Ta Na Ma & Aa) and correspondingly will balance the five elements. And, the mantra “Waheguru” is a Trikuti Mantra which will balance the three gunas and their corresponding states of mind - the Animal Nature, the Earthly Human, and the Angelic Human. All in all, a daily practice of Kundalini Yoga, Sadhana, will produce in us a general vitality which works for our own success and victory in life. And the great news is that when we focus on a particular practice, such as Kirtan Kriya, we can bring an overall state of healing into our lives which will cover us and deliver us to our destinies! Here is a link for Kirtan Kriya.

There are so many priceless teachings which Yogi Bhajan gave to us, and for these, we are grateful beyond words. We are fortunate to have had these wonderful teachings shared with us, and in return we must share these teachings with the world. It is the mission of The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings to preserve these teachings and to make them available to all who seek them. We are extremely excited to announce that we are hoping to have the initial stages of The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings, the digital database of all of the recorded video and audio lectures, up and active on the internet in early 2013!

Giving is a way to create an energetic flow in life. Sharing what we earn for the purpose of supporting that which benefits our lives is a great way to ensure that the lives of others may be benefitted too. So, please consider making a donation to The Yogi Bhajan Library of Teachings or becoming a monthly subscribing donor. Please visit www.yogibhajan.org and donate today!

Thank you to everyone that donated in 2012 and a special mention to our new donors from last month:

We Are KRI

Blessings and Greetings for a Happy New Year in 2013. I have recently returned from spending time with our future Teachers of Kundalini Yoga who are being trained at Miri Piri Academy. While I was there I spent time with the Senior Class in their Level Two Conscious Communication Course. I was deeply moved by these students and how honestly they took on the dialogue of Conscious Communication.

Our community of Trainers and Teachers is in a time of deep transition and transformation as our next generation joins with the contemporary leadership in setting the direction of the future. We now have more than 200 next generation trainers moving through the Aquarian Academy and we have Professional and Lead Trainers that are 30 years of age and younger. It is an exciting time of very lively discussions among the generations. Please visit the Forum area of our website to see the latest announcements from the Winter Solstice Trainers Forum at the Hampton Inn in Lake Wales.

Winter Solstice is also the time of year when we stop, take a breath and reflect on the past year and to set our intention for the next year. In my own reflection I was thinking of two of our young teachers who have died and wanted to take this opportunity to give tribute to them. Pritham Bhagauti Kaur Khalsa, the daughter of Guru Tej Kaur and Tej Steiner, passed away in December of 2012 and Guru Simran Kaur Khalsa, the daughter of Siri Marka singh and Dharam Dev Kaur, passed away in October of 2010. Here are excerpts from Tributes to these beautiful teachers, for the full article please go to the IKYTA website Memorial Page to read more on these young Teachers and Trainers of the Future.

A Tribute to Pritham

“Pritham Bhagauti was one of the bravest and most beautiful souls I have ever known. She uplifted and inspired everyone from a very young age, a teacher in her essence. One of my favorite memories of her was when we were at the Toronto airport with the Siri Singh Sahib and he points to 4 year old Pritham and says “Can you believe these two (pointing at her parents Gurutej Singh aka Tej Steiner and Gurutej Kaur), made this (pointing at Pritham)? Do you know how special this child is?!”

I do know how special Pritham is/was and I continue to see Pritham’s bright shining face, her incredible positivity, and her superhuman strength. She was and is an amazing soul! ...During all her sickness, she never complained. She just wanted to experience love, kindness, joy and beauty…

Bless you my sweet friend. We will miss you dearly! “

The Legacy of 14 year old, Guru Simran Kaur
Angel in Our Midst

Guru Simran Kaur is the daughter of Siri Marka Singh and Dharam Dev Kaur of Los Angeles, and the younger sister of Guru Parkash Kaur of Espanola, who works at IKYTA. She was studying to be a teacher of Kundalini Yoga at Miri Piri Academy before she was diagnosed with cancer and returned home to her parents. She passed away in September of 2010. This is an excerpt from an article by her parents.

“Quality of time on this earth, rather than quantity is what we experienced with Guru Simran Kaur Khalsa, the 14 year old daughter of Siri Marka Singh and Dharam Dev Kaur and younger sister of Guru Parkash Kaur. She was born into the cozy, loving arms of her Khalsa family and community, with Yogi Bhajan as her spiritual teacher. With her devoted family she attended and served at many of Yogi Bhajan’s classes in Los Angeles and was infused with respect and understanding of the teachings. Yogi Bhajan called her his little secretary. She was definitely the littlest in age and stature at that time.

As a young student of Yogi Bhajan, her teacher-like qualities blossomed early on. Her legacy through example of innocence, humility, kindness, joy, courage, strength and fearlessness will live on in our hearts and minds, now and forever. Through it we will reach out, love, inspire, and uplift those near and far in partnership with her. We have learned from our experience with Guru Simran Kaur what a precious temporal gift this life is. Her message to share is, “All We Have, Is What We Have To Give”. Our hearts are open to deliver what we have learned through our teacher Yogi Bhajan and our 14 year old daughter , his littlest secretary.“

The Roads I Cross
By Guru Simran Kaur Khalsa, 12 years old

My roads are special but I can’t see where they will lead me.
Will they take me here or there, up, down, where?
Will I go through hills, valleys, wild turns, even loop-d-loops.

When I come to a point where I have to decide whether to take one road and not the other, up pop more for me to choose from. And sorry I am that I cannot travel them all.

Traveling one road and not the other I think of how the other would have felt and where it would have taken me.

But after traveling so far through hills, valleys, and the twists and turns of life, I will come to the point when it is time, that time, to choose my very last road. I know I will choose the right one, the very best road to my final destination.

Here is a recipe for one of my favorite dishes from the new 2nd Edition of "A Taste of India" by Bibi Inderjit Kaur Khalsa, PhD, and available this month from our webstore:

Recipe of the month: Chickpea Dahl Curry (Chanaa Daal Karee)

chickpea dhal curry

This spicy, satisfying dish is an unusual blend of flavors. Serve with plain rice.

½ cup lotus root
7 cups water
½ cup chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
½ cup cubed peeled eggplant
1 tomato, chopped
12 green chilies, mild or hot, to taste, chopped fine
½ cup diced cauliflower
1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
½ cup green peas, fresh or frozen
2 teaspoons ground turmeric
1 teaspoon crushed dry red chilies
½ cup ghee or vegetable oil
2 teaspoons mustard seeds

If the lotus root is dry, it should be soaked overnight. (Canned lotus root need not be soaked.) Also, clean and soak the chickpeas in 7 cups of water overnight. In the morning, wash, peel and cut the lotus root into small pieces. Cook the chickpeas in the water in which they were soaked, along with the lotus root pieces. When the chickpeas have become very soft, remove the lotus root pieces from the water and set them aside in a bowl. Strain off the water from the chickpeas (don’t throw the water away, though!) and set aside.

In a large, thick-bottomed pot, place the chickpeas, 8 cups of water (including chickpea water), salt, turmeric, red chilies, and all the vegetables except the lotus root. Cook over low heat until all the vegetables are soft. Add the cooked lotus root.
