Self-worth and belonging.
My story with Level One Teacher Training
What have you experienced in your life that changed it completely? Did you meet a person that changed your way of thinking, or did you practice a meditation that altered your consciousness enough to change your way of living?
My life changed completely after my Level One Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training in Bali in 2018. I would not be who I am today if it hadn’t been for this training. I am beyond grateful.
My Story
After I had practiced Kundalini Yoga for a couple of years, I knew I wanted to do this training. I didn’t necessarily want to teach as much as I wanted to deepen my own practice. I was intensely drawn to the teacher Rachel Sat Siri Dougherty. There was something magnetic about her. Her radiance, her way of delivering the teachings, her femininity and grace. Her energy pulled me in.
I met her for the first time in New Mexico at Women’s Camp 2017 where she co-led with another amazing teacher, Pauline Drossart. The transformation that happened during these 5 days with Sat Siri and Pauline was beyond measure. I knew that I wanted to train with both. When I inquired Sat Siri about the next Kundalini Yoga Level One teacher training in New Mexico she suggested Bali Immersion.
I took Sat Siri’s advice and 7 months later I found myself in Bali and I felt a huge shift. This is more than a 5-week training I thought. This is an initiation. I knew this training would change me forever. And after spending 5 weeks in deep practice in a community with women all over the world practicing Kundalini Yoga and learning about the lineage I was a changed person.
This training turned my life around from being a victim to becoming victorious. This training provided me with tools and practices to overcome addiction. I felt a sense of self-worth and belonging.
During the training, we practiced a posture that changed my life completely – 22 min of Archer pose (11 min each side). This was the most challenging part of the whole training for me. I remember how much I cried in class, how much I was shaking and how frustrated I felt. I was exhausted after those 22 mins. And I told myself that I would never have to do the pose ever again.
In the last days of the training, we met individually with Sat Siri to be given a kriya to practice for the next 40 days to complete the immersion.
I was given Archer pose. I thought she was kidding but she wasn’t. The practice I struggled with the most was now going to be my daily sadhana for 40 DAYS. I got frustrated. This felt impossible. How was I ever going to make this happen? Why did she give me this pose? I felt helpless. Many thoughts were moving around in my head. My whole body said no but I was given this posture. It was meant for me, and I didn’t want to let Sat Siri down. So, I accepted it.
The first couple of days I failed. And I had to start over. I was crying every day as I practiced because I was so challenged. One of the reasons why it was so hard for me, is that this posture works and strengthens your nervous system and because of many years of drug addiction my nervous system was really strained.
Despite the resistance, I continued the practice. It took about 2 weeks before I could relax in the pose. It was hard and challenged me in so many ways. Soon I started to add in a strong intention. My steady intention was to start my own business. Quit my restaurant job and start to teach yoga around the world. And that one day I would be the assistant of this Bali Immersion training.
After the 40 days had gone by, I decided to keep going and I continued for 90 days. 90 days turned into 120 days and 120 days turned into 1000 days. I practiced Archer Pose for 3 years at airports in bathrooms and in parking lots. I didn’t miss a single day. It was my daily medicine. Each day I completed Archer pose was a victory. And I kept telling myself… Only for today I must do Archer Pose. And I kept going.
I am extremely grateful that I met Sat Siri when I did. She has been a huge inspiration ever since I met her, and I have continued to study with her for the last 5 years. By now I have taught Archer Pose at Women’s Camp, at Winter Solstice, and at yoga retreats and workshops all over the world.
Archer pose helped me get in contact with my spiritual warrior. It helped me trust myself again and to realize my power. One of my dreams and intentions has been to come back to Bali and assist this immersion that changed my life completely. And a couple of months ago I received an invitation to join the team in Bali for Level One Kundalini Teacher Training in September 2023.
