Healing with Kundalini Yoga – Hints from Early Science
Sat Naam and greetings to you!
In this second month of KRI’s focus on Healing, I want to concentrate on the growing body of scientific evidence for the health power of our practices.
If you are a regular practitioner of Kundalini Yoga and Meditation, you know how powerful these practices can be, and how great you feel after a kriya. My Note last month was about the inner healing that is naturally triggered by basically every kriya. And in addition to that deep emotional healing, Kundalini Yoga is also powerfully affecting all your other physical systems. We are a long way from really understanding all of the causal mechanisms for these effects, but we are getting more and more exciting confirmations published in respected scientific journals.
For example, an article was published in July of this year showing that an 8 week Kundalini Yoga practice was helpful for some secondary symptoms of people suffering from the long-term effects of Lyme disease!
You may not need the proof of these papers to justify your practice. But they can be a nice entry way for you to introduce Kundalini Yoga and Meditation to new groups of people. Scientific studies can give new people a sense of security and help open them up to giving Kundalini Yoga a try. So it’s nice to know that there is a growing group of university affiliated researchers (check out KRI’s research advisory committee) working to expand what we can prove about this amazing practice’s impact on our healing!
Read more about the Lyme disease study, and another study just published this September showing that Kundalini Yoga practice increases the size of the hippocampus in this blog article. Research studies of interventions involving Kundalini Yoga practices have also shown relevant clinical efficacy for generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, diabetes, pre-dementia cognitive decline, obsessive-compulsive disorder, stress, insomnia and drug addiction. Find these papers and many, many more in KRI’s new research library!
KRI’s website also has a large collection of articles that summarize (so you don’t have to wade through the science articles themselves!) the current scientific studies on yoga for various disorders and conditions. Check them out!

Highlights of this month
21 reasons to take 21 Stages of Meditation
Even if you have a strong personal yoga practice, and even if you meditate every day, our subconscious minds still accumulate mental detritus that gradually clogs up and slows down our sensitivity, our intuition, and our spiritual connection. We all need an occasional deep meditation experience to clean and clear out that mental garbage. Just like we want to periodically cleanse our body with a special diet, our minds need a periodic cleanse as well. A daily sadhana certainly helps, but you really should treat yourself to a couple of full days of meditation every year.
No matter what your experience level, you are welcome to take 2 days, 4 days, or all 6 days of this upcoming 21 Stages of Meditation online course. The first weekend is coming up – starting Oct 8th. But if you are doing 2 days, you can do any of the weekends that work for your schedule. Open to all meditation lovers, no matter how much or how little experience you have. Treat yourself and let your mental overload go!
